Afghanistan, at the crossroads of Central, South, and West Asia with a population of around 42 million, has been Muslim-majority since the seventh- and eighth-century Arab conquests and is one of the most religiously conservative societies in the wider Muslim world. The population is around 99% Muslim, predominantly Sunni and following the Hanafi school of jurisprudence — the Hanafi tradition's reach across Central Asia is partly thanks to centuries of Afghan scholarship at Herat, Balkh, and Ghazni. There is a significant Shia minority of around 10–15%, mostly among the Hazara population, who follow the Twelver tradition. The Shrine of the Cloak of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in Kandahar and the Blue Mosque (Shrine of Ali) in Mazar-i-Sharif are among the country's most venerated sites. Prayer times are commonly calculated using the University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi method (Fajr/Isha 18°/18°). Afghanistan observes Afghanistan Time (UTC+4:30), one of the few half-hour offset zones.
Afghanistan is predominantly Hanafi (Sunni), and the University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi calculation method is used by default across the country. For Asr, the Hanafi convention is applied — Asr begins when the shadow of an object is twice its length, slightly later than in other schools. Fajr begins at astronomical twilight when the sun is below the horizon, and Isha begins after the red twilight has fully disappeared from the sky.
