The Qibla from Alexandria points toward the Masjid al-Haram in Makkah. Makkah is approximately 1,468 km along the great-circle path. Orient your prayer space so it faces this bearing before performing Salah.
Alexandria, founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BCE on Egypt's Mediterranean coast, is the country's second-largest city with a population of about five million and its main seaport. After centuries as a Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine metropolis it became part of the Muslim world following the Arab conquest of Egypt in 641 CE, and it remained an important Islamic centre across the Fatimid, Ayyubid, Mamluk, and Ottoman periods. The city's spiritual focal point is the thirteenth-century mosque and shrine of Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi, the Andalusian Sufi saint, rebuilt in its current form in 1943 and surrounded by the historic Anfushi mosque quarter. Alexandria follows the Egyptian General Authority of Survey calculation method (Fajr 19.5°, Isha 17.5°) used nationwide and is on Eastern European Time (UTC+2, UTC+3 with daylight saving). Its coastal Mediterranean climate is milder and wetter than inland Cairo, and at 31° north it shares Cairo's moderate seasonal prayer-time pattern.
