The Qibla from Kuala Lumpur points toward the Masjid al-Haram in Makkah. Makkah is approximately 6,974 km along the great-circle path. Orient your prayer space so it faces this bearing before performing Salah.
Kuala Lumpur, the federal capital of Malaysia, sits at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers — the name itself means "muddy confluence" in Malay — and is home to a city population of around 1.8 million within a metropolitan region of more than eight million. Malaysia is constitutionally a Muslim country, with Islam as the religion of the federation, and about 64% of the national population practises a Sunni-Shafi'i tradition shaped by centuries of trade with the wider Indian Ocean Muslim world. The Masjid Negara, opened in 1965 just after independence, features a striking 16-pointed star roof intended to represent the thirteen states of Malaysia and the five pillars of Islam, with capacity for 15,000 worshippers. The older Masjid Jamek (1909), built at the river confluence in Mughal-revival style by British architect Arthur Benison Hubback, is the city's oldest mosque. Prayer times are published nationally by JAKIM (the Department of Islamic Development), and the city is on Malaysia Standard Time (UTC+8), with very stable schedules year-round at 3° north.
Prayer times shift gradually throughout the year as the sun's position changes. Read about the 10+ supported calculation methods and the astronomical math behind the schedule.
